Before you get a quote
Four things to know first
- Roof slating is its own trade category NSW names roof slating as a trade category of its own. Over A$5,000 in labour and materials, including GST, the contractor needs a NSW contractor licence. There is no separate slate roofing licence, so ask whoever quotes which category the work falls under.
- Many slates can be reused The NSW Heritage Office's maintenance sheet says most slates stripped from a roof are likely to be reusable, and that at least 10% commonly need replacing. The sheet is dated March 1998 (online edition 2004).
- A heritage roof may need the council first Exempt development does not reach a heritage item or a heritage conservation area, and North Sydney Council says replacing roofing on a heritage item or a conservation-area property needs its written permission. Ask your own council before the roof comes off.
- A slate roof is work at height SafeWork NSW says a business must protect workers from a fall whatever the height, and a safe work method statement is required where a person could fall more than two metres.
Three steps
From enquiry to quote
- Tell us about the roof What the slates are doing, what you can see from the ground, and what you want done.
- It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Sydney. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
- A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the roof and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.
Slate Roofing across Sydney
A slate roof usually shows its trouble at the nails before the slate itself gives out. The NSW Heritage Office's maintenance sheet says slates in the gutter are often a sign of rusted nails, and that water stains appearing as thin streaks down the slates may be an early indication of nail failure. The sheet is dated March 1998, online edition 2004, so it is guidance, not a rule.
